Our search in the ethnomedical literature has resulted in the identification of a few plant species which have been traditionally used for management of dermatological disorders, inflammation and rheumatic diseases. Based on their traditional use we have selected Wrightia tinctoria, Azadirachta indica and Hemidesmus indicus for detailed investigations.
The plant is used extensively in Indian Systems of Medicine. The oil emulsion of the pods is used to treat dermatological disorders. The bark and seeds are antidysenteric and also used for stomach pain and toothache.The plant is astringent, tonic, febrifuge and stomachic. The bark and seeds are used in flatulence and bilious affections. A decoction of the leaves and bark is rubbed over the body in dropsy. The seeds possess aphrodisiac and anthelmintic properties.

A medium-sized tree with clean bole of 10-25’ and a girth of 6-8’. Although described as evergreen, in dry areas it becomes deciduous. The flowers appear from March-May and the fruits ripen during June-August. The tree grows wild in the dry forests of the Decan and in the open scrub forests of the dry zone of Burma. It is cultivated all over India. It is well suited for afforestation in dry situations and is a common avenue tree.
It is used in skin diseases such as scrofula, indolent ulcers, sores and ring worm. It is reputed to possess anthelmintic and insecticidal properties. The bark is a good bitter tonic, astringent and antiperiodic. It is considered useful in skin diseases. The leaves are bitter and have a faint but characteristic unpleasant smell. The odour produced by the burning of powdered leaves is said to be fatal to insects. The leaves are applied to boils in the form of a poultice and decoction is recommended in ulcers and eczema. The dry flowers are considered tonic and stomachic. The berries are regarded as purgative, emollient and anthelmintic. (Wealth of India, Raw Materials Vol.I CSIR, New Delhi).

Response was evaluated on the 14th, 28th, 42nd, and 90th day of application based on:
| Total Patients | Dropout | Male | Female | 100% Relief | 75% Relief | 50% Relief | 25% Relief | Nil |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 5 | 37 | 8 | 12 | 23 | 7 | 2 | 1 |
| Percentage (%) of evaluated patients | 26.67% | 51.11% | 15.56% | 4.44% | 2.22% | |||
Scaling and itching had subsequently reduced in almost all cases. 75% relief was noticed in more than 50% of the patients. No adverse reaction was reported by any of the patients.
The patient who did not show any response worked as a daily wager in a building construction company and could not maintain proper hygiene. His working schedule exposed him to all vagaries of nature, dirt, dust, and a large number of allergens, especially chemical dusts.
