It is used in skin diseases such as scrofula, indolent ulcers, sores and ring worm.  It is reputed to possess anthelmintic and insecticidal properties.  The bark is a good bitter tonic, astringent and antiperiodic.  It is considered useful in skin diseases.  The leaves are bitter and have a faint but characteristic unpleasant smell.  The odour produced by the burning of powdered leaves is said to be fatal to insects.  The leaves are applied to boils in the form of a poultice and decoction is recommended in ulcers and eczema.  The dry flowers are considered tonic and stomachic.  The berries are regarded as purgative, emollient and anthelmintic.
